Post subject: Java Virtual Machine Memory Size

I have a 2 GB memory machine at work and that makes my life as hell as a java developer
I use rational Software Architect and whenever I check the processes on my machine I find that Java process is the heviest with almost 400 MB in memory
why does Java Virtual Machine consume such an amount of memory?
